Important limitations and disclaimers about AI background removal results, known model constraints, and when not to rely on automated cutouts.

Last updated: November 3, 2026

ImgCutout is a free tool that uses artificial intelligence to remove backgrounds from photos. While we work to make the results as accurate as possible, there are important limitations and disclaimers you should understand before using the output for official, commercial, or regulated purposes.

AI results are not official guarantees

The background remover uses machine learning to predict which pixels belong to the subject and which belong to the background. The cutouts it produces are AI-generated predictions, not official photo editing, and are not reviewed or certified by any government agency, marketplace, or professional body.

For passport and ID photos: Many government agencies do not accept photos that have been digitally altered or retouched, including those with AI-removed or replaced backgrounds. Some passport authorities require an unedited photo taken against a physical background. Even when digital editing is allowed, the final decision to accept or reject your photo is made by a human reviewer following rules that change and that we do not control. Always check the current official requirements for your country and document type before submitting a photo made with this tool. We are not responsible for rejected applications.

For marketplace product photos: Online marketplaces such as Amazon, eBay, and Etsy set their own image requirements and enforce them through both automated checks and manual review. While this tool can help you create product shots with white or transparent backgrounds, the marketplace may still reject your image if it does not meet their size, lighting, framing, or quality standards. You are responsible for ensuring your photos comply with the marketplace's current rules.

For printed materials: The resolution and quality of the output depend on your original photo and your device's processing capabilities. Phones and low-memory devices may downscale large images before processing to avoid running out of memory. Always check that the result meets your print resolution and color accuracy requirements before using it commercially.

Known model limitations

The AI model that powers the background remover has known limitations:

Fine and transparent details: Hair, fur, thin fabric, and transparent or semi-transparent objects such as glass, plastic, eyeglasses, and water are difficult for the model. The edges of these objects may appear cut off, blocky, or imprecise. The edge slider can help, but results vary by photo. For the best chance of preserving fine details, use a photo with good contrast between the subject and the background, and strong, even lighting.

Groups of people or animals: The model is trained primarily on single-subject photos. When multiple people, pets, or objects overlap or touch, the model may cut some of them out of the result or leave gaps between them. If you need to cut out a group, review the result carefully and be prepared to edit it further with other software.

Complex or busy backgrounds: Photos with cluttered, patterned, or multicolored backgrounds are harder for the model to separate cleanly. Shadows, reflections, and objects that blend into the background may be kept in the cutout or may cause the subject's edges to be cut unevenly.

Unusual angles, poses, and cropping: The model performs best on well-framed, front-facing or profile portraits and centered product shots. Extreme close-ups, unusual camera angles, partial crops of the subject, and uncommon poses may produce less accurate results.

These are fundamental limits of the current model, not bugs. Every cutout should be reviewed before you use it.

The guides on this site explain how to use the tool, what government and marketplace rules typically require, and which photos the model handles well or poorly. They are written for general information only and are not professional advice. They are not a substitute for:

  • Official passport or ID photo requirements, which are set by each country's government and change over time. Always check the official source.
  • Legal advice on copyright, trademark, privacy, or publicity rights. If you are unsure whether you have the right to edit or publish a photo, consult a lawyer.
  • Professional photo editing or retouching services. The tool is automated and does not replace a human editor.
  • Medical, forensic, or evidentiary photo requirements. Do not use the tool for photos that will be used as legal or medical evidence.

The guides cite official sources where they discuss government or marketplace rules, and show the date those sources were last checked. If a rule has changed since then and you notice the guide is out of date, please let us know so we can correct it.

Your images are processed locally

Unlike most online background removers, ImgCutout runs entirely in your web browser. When you drop or select an image, your browser reads it into its own memory, the AI model processes it on your device, and you download the result. The image pixels, file names, and metadata are never uploaded to our servers or sent to any third party, including our advertising and hosting providers. This design is explained in detail on our Privacy Policy page, and the guide How to check that your images are never uploaded shows you how to verify it yourself.

Because nothing is uploaded, we have nothing to store, retain, or use for training. When you close or reload the tab, the images are gone unless you downloaded them. You keep all rights to your images and to the cutouts you create.

Contact for issues

If a cutout produced by the tool causes a problem — for example, if it is rejected by an agency or marketplace and you believe the rejection is due to a technical defect rather than the expected model limitations described above — please contact us with details. We cannot overturn a rejection or intervene with the reviewing body, but reports of unexpected failures help us improve the tool and update our guides.
