Changelog
What's new in ImgCutout
Notable changes to the tools, the AI model, our policies, and the guides, newest first.
- Published our test results: processing time, mask accuracy at 8, 16, and 32-bit precision, soft-edge share, and PNG, WEBP, and JPG file sizes, measured on six real photos. The benchmark script is part of the source code and is re-run when the model changes.
- Added an example library that lists the source, license, settings, and measured data for every before/after example.
- New guides: glass, jewelry, and reflective products, clothing on a white background, and printable photo checklists.
- Corrected the hair and glass guide: our measurements showed that clear glass comes out partly transparent, not mostly opaque as the guide previously said.
- Guides now show their author, publication date, and what was tested for each one.
- The PNG creator page now explains exactly what each setting changes and answers questions specific to logos, signatures, and print sizes.
- Loaded Google's certified consent management platform (Privacy & messaging) ahead of ads, so consent choices are available before the first ad request.
- Launched the guides: 23 in-depth articles on marketplace product photos, passport and ID photos, file formats, hair and glass edges, and how on-device AI works.
- Added About, Contact, and Terms of Service pages, and rewrote the Privacy Policy to cover advertising cookies, consent, and your choices.
- Added a Privacy choices link to the footer for changing ad-consent settings at any time.
- Example galleries now list the photo source, license, and the exact settings used to make each cutout.
- Clarified that WebGPU is optional (off by default) and exactly what keeps working offline.
- The single-image and bulk tools now share the same background templates and portrait retouching.
- Better behavior on phones and low-memory devices: only one AI runtime is kept in memory at a time, and very large photos are handled more gracefully.
- The faster 8-bit model (about 28MB) is now the default; the 16-bit and 32-bit versions remain available in Settings.
- New portrait retouching: skin smoothing and brightening, powered by on-device MediaPipe face models.
- Launched the bulk background remover: up to 100 product photos at once with marketplace size presets, shadows, renaming, and ZIP download. The model now runs in a Web Worker.
- Added real before/after examples, each one the tool's unedited output, and expanded the PNG creator page.
- First public release of ImgCutout: a free, private background remover that runs in the browser.
- Added the PNG creator page, a contact email, and a contact form.
How we record changes
This page lists every change that affects what you see or what the tools do: new features, changes to the AI model or its default settings, fixes to claims in our guides, and changes to our privacy practices. Purely internal changes, such as refactoring, are left out. When a guide is corrected, the guide's "Updated" date changes too, and the correction is listed here, so earlier readers can see what changed and why.

What a model change means for you
The model is the part of the tool that decides what is subject and what is background, so a model change can change your results. When we update it, we re-run our benchmark on the same six photos, publish the new numbers, and note any visible differences here. Your browser downloads the new model once on your next visit, then caches it. Defaults, such as the 8-bit model on phones and low-memory devices, only change when the measurements support it, and the reason is recorded in this log.
Reporting a problem
If a change made results worse for your kind of photo, or you find a mistake in a guide, please tell us. Reports from users have the highest priority in this log.
