Passport and ID photos: changing the background the right way

Background colors and photo sizes for US, UK, Schengen, and other ID photos, what passport offices say about digital editing, and how to make a compliant photo at home.

Getting a passport or ID photo rejected is frustrating and can delay travel by weeks. A surprising number of rejections come down to the background: a shadow behind the head, a wall that is not quite white, or a texture that shows up in the print. Removing the background and replacing it with a clean, even color can fix that. But passport offices also have strict rules about editing photos, so it matters how you do it.

This guide covers the common background and size requirements, what you are and are not allowed to change, and a workflow for making a photo at home.

Common background and size requirements

Requirements differ by country and by document. A few common ones:

DocumentPhoto sizeBackground
US passport and visa2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm); digital 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 pxWhite or off-white, plain, no shadows
UK passport35 × 45 mm printed; digital photos to the size the online service asks forPlain cream or light gray, no shadows
Schengen visa and many EU documents35 × 45 mmLight, plain, uniform (often light gray or white)
China ID-style photos ("1 inch", "2 inch")25 × 35 mm (1 inch), 35 × 49 mm (2 inch)White, blue, or red depending on the use

Always check the official requirements for your specific document before you print or submit. The figures above were checked against the official sources listed at the end of this page on the date shown at the top, but rules change and some offices have additional requirements for head size, eye position, and file format.

What you are allowed to change

This is the part most online tools skip. Passport authorities generally want an unaltered photo of your face:

  • The US Department of State says photos must not be digitally altered or edited, and filters are not allowed.
  • The UK government says your photo must not be altered by computer software.

Background replacement sits in a gray area. Many photo shops and kiosks do produce a clean, even background, and digital photo services often adjust the background, but rules about "alteration" are mainly concerned with your face and appearance. Our practical advice:

  • Never retouch your face for an official photo. Leave Smooth skin and Brighten skin at zero. Skin smoothing, blemish removal, and brightening are exactly what the rules prohibit.
  • Do not change the size or position of your head, your eye color, or anything else about your appearance.
  • Prefer a real plain background when you can. Stand in front of a white or light gray wall with even light; then you only need to tidy a shadow, not invent a background. The cleaner the original, the less the cutout has to do.
  • If in doubt, ask or use an approved service. Some applications, especially online renewals, run automatic checks. If your photo is rejected, a photo taken at an approved photo service is the reliable fallback.

How to take the photo at home

  1. Stand about half a meter in front of a plain, light wall, facing a window so daylight falls evenly on your face. Standing away from the wall reduces the shadow behind you.
  2. Ask someone else to take the photo from about 1 to 1.5 meters away, with the camera at eye level. Selfies distort facial proportions and are rejected by many offices.
  3. Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open, looking straight at the camera. Remove glasses (the US no longer allows glasses in most cases). Hair should not cover your eyes.
  4. Take several shots and pick the sharpest, with even light on both sides of your face.

Replacing the background in the tool

  1. Open the background remover and add the photo. It is processed on your device; the photo of your face is not uploaded.
  2. Check the edge around your hair. Hair is the hardest part of any portrait cutout. If wisps are cut off or the old wall shows through, adjust the edge setting in Settings (Wider keeps more hair, Tighter removes leftover background). Why hair, fur, and glass are hard explains what is going on.
  3. Choose the background color your document needs: White for US and many others, a custom light gray for UK-style requirements, or the ID photo blue and ID photo red presets for documents that require those colors.
  4. Leave retouching off.
  5. Open Crop and pick the preset for your document: US passport (2 × 2 in, 600 × 600 px), Passport / Visa (35 × 45 mm), 1 inch (25 × 35 mm), 2 inch (35 × 49 mm), or Small 2 inch (33 × 48 mm). These presets export at the exact pixel size for 300 DPI printing. Use the zoom slider to position your head according to your document's head-size rule.
  6. Download as JPG for printing or for online submission, unless the service asks for another format.

Printing at home or at a store

For a printed photo, place several copies on a standard 4 × 6 inch (10 × 15 cm) photo print in any layout app, making sure it is printed at 100% scale, not "fit to page". Photo kiosks at pharmacies and supermarkets usually have a passport layout option too. Print on photo paper, not plain paper, and do not cut the photos until you have checked the size with a ruler.

Common reasons ID photos are rejected

  • Shadows on the face or behind the head.
  • Background not plain or not the required color.
  • Head too small or too large in the frame, or tilted.
  • Photo is blurry, grainy, or has a filter applied.
  • Glasses, hats, or headphones (religious and medical exceptions apply with documentation).
  • Photo older than six months, for many documents.

Summary

For an official photo, the background should be plain, even, and the required color, and your face should be completely untouched. Shoot against a light wall in even daylight, use background replacement to tidy shadows or meet a required color, crop with the preset for your document, and leave all retouching off. When an application is important and the rules are unclear, an approved photo service is the safest option.
