Adding natural shadows to product cutouts

Why products look like they are floating after the background is removed, the four shadow styles (none, ground, soft, reflection) and when to use each, and how to keep shadows marketplace-compliant.

Remove the background from a product photo, place it on pure white, and something often looks off. The product seems to hover above the page, like a sticker. The reason is that the original photo had a shadow under the product, and the background remover correctly treated it as part of the background. This guide explains why shadows matter, the different styles you can add back, and when each one is appropriate.

Why cutouts look like they are floating

Our eyes judge whether an object is resting on a surface mostly from the shadow where it touches that surface: a thin, dark line of contact and a softer falloff around it. Without that cue, the brain reads the object as floating or pasted on. Product photographers spend a lot of effort on the shadow for exactly this reason.

When an AI model removes the background, it separates the object from everything that is not the object. A shadow on the table is not the object, so it goes away with the table. That is the correct behavior for a transparent PNG you want to place on any background, but for a finished product photo it removes the depth cue that made it look real.

The fix is to add a clean, generated shadow back after the cutout. A generated shadow has two advantages over the original: it is consistent across every product in a batch, and it does not carry the color cast or texture of whatever surface you shot on.

The four shadow styles

The bulk background remover offers four options under Shadow. They apply to the whole batch, so every product in a listing set gets the same treatment.

None

No shadow. The product sits directly on the background. This is the right choice for transparent PNG exports that will be placed into a design later (a design tool can add its own shadow that matches the final layout), for products that are photographed from above (flat lays), and when a marketplace or client explicitly asks for no shadow.

Ground

An elliptical contact shadow directly under the product: darkest at the center of the base and fading quickly outward. It is the most neutral option and the closest to what a well-lit studio shot looks like. Use it for products that stand on a base, such as bottles, boxes, shoes, appliances, and furniture.

Soft

A blurred shadow that follows the outline of the whole product and falls slightly downward, as if a large soft light were placed just above it. Instead of a pool at the base, it gives the product a gentle lift off the page. It works well on colored or gradient backgrounds where a hard contact shadow can look harsh, and on products without a flat base, such as bags and cosmetics with irregular shapes.

Reflection

A faded mirror image of the product below it, as if it were standing on glossy acrylic. It suggests a premium, tech-style look and suits electronics, watches, perfume, and glassware. Use it sparingly: it doubles the visual weight of the product and can feel dated in some categories.

Shadows and marketplace rules

Amazon's main image rules require a pure white background and no added graphics, but natural-looking shadows under the product are widely used on main images and are generally accepted, because they are part of how a real product photo looks. What gets images flagged is a shadow that reads as a gray box or a gradient background. Keep shadows subtle: Ground or Soft, not Reflection, is the safer choice for an Amazon main image. If you want to be completely certain, None is always compliant.

eBay and Etsy have no specific rules about shadows. Shopify leaves it to your theme and brand; the most important thing there is that every product uses the same style.

Shadows on colored and gradient backgrounds

On white, a neutral gray shadow looks natural. On a colored background, a pure gray shadow can look dirty, because real shadows pick up the color of the surface they fall on. Two tips:

  • Prefer Soft on saturated colors and gradients, since a diffuse shadow is less noticeable.
  • Choose lighter, less saturated backgrounds (such as Warm sand, Mint, Sky, or Blush in the template list) when you want a colored look with a shadow. Very dark backgrounds hide shadows almost entirely, so None is usually cleaner there.

Should you keep the original shadow instead?

Sometimes the original shadow is beautiful, for example a long, soft window-light shadow in a lifestyle photo. In that case, removing the background is the wrong tool: you would lose the very thing that makes the photo good. Keep lifestyle photos as they are, and use background removal for the clean catalog shots that need a consistent white or brand background.

If you need a cutout but want to keep a realistic shadow, shoot on a white surface and use a light, even setup. Then the generated Ground shadow will be close to what the camera saw anyway. How to shoot product photos for clean cutouts has a simple lighting setup.

Summary

Removing the background also removes the shadow that made the product look grounded. Adding a consistent generated shadow fixes this: Ground for most products that stand on a base, Soft for colored backgrounds and softer styling, Reflection for a glossy premium look, and None for transparent PNGs and flat lays. Keep shadows subtle on Amazon main images.
